Found this on texags....

Figured it was a good read...

There is a very good article in this months 12th Man Magazine regarding the new Adidas contact that will go into affect June 1st.

Here are the details of the Adidas contact as described Rusty Burson.

First let me provide the details of the old Nike Contract:

- $800,000 in cash TOTAL over the course of a 5 year contract
- $400,000 per year to spend on athletic apparel (wholesale rate)
- Note: Football apparel alone was $400,000, meaning every other sport had to write Nike a check for their apparel.

Adidas Contract:

- $250,000 Signing Bonus
- $800,000 in cash PER YEAR with an additional 10% increase per year for 7 years
- $1,000,000 per year to spend on athletic apparel (wholesale rate) with a $25,000 increase each year
- Additional $200,000 to spend on athletic apparel in the first year of the contract

After looking at the numbers it was an absolute no brainer. We would have been insane to stay with Nike considering what Adidas had to offer. Great job by Byrne and his staff for negotiating a deal like this.

It depends on what percentage is spent on shoes and what is spent on apparel and the ole" You get what you pay for"

Speaking from someone who runs 30-40 miles/week and who cycles 40-50 mpw I'll tell you right now that Nike Shoes are the worst POS ever put on the market and I know for a fact that not only are they more expensive they are engineered to have a shorter life cycle.

However, even if their shoes (ironically enough) sucks the apparel is top notch. Nike dri-fit technology is is one of the best things ever invented right along with the mp3 player and DVR. I have worn every other brand and Nike is the only brand where I can run 10+ miles and still not be sweated through 100%. And this includes apparel by Adidas, Brooks, Under Armour, Reebok, and New Balance.

So if most of that money is spent on shoes then we are way better off. Nike shoes are THE SUCK.

But then again, this whole post by me is a moot point, probably, when you consider the 800,000 dollar contracts involved. Who cares what product is better when it's all about the money anyway.

I'm not sure how much of a difference most of the uniforms will make anyways. One good thing is A&M won't have to worry about being subjected to those ugly basketball tights (or whatever they were) that Nike was rolling out...

When you look at it we get 600k more to spend on apparel a year more then the nike contract, you can spend the other money on training equip.

It had to be Groff to suck that bad

Bill Byrne is best thing to happen to A&M

Exactly what I was thinking. I love how people on Texags think we should fire Byrne b/c of ticket prices.

i think most of the flack byrne takes on the ticket prices is deserved.... but im basing things on our prices in relation to other schools that have undeniably better programs than we do yet our prices are just as high and in many cases higher. almost like we are being asked to pay for championship caliber teams before they are there.

Most other places raise prices after they have done good not before.... and i think thats where most of the flack comes from.

And I understand the side you have to spend $ to get great coaches etc but it still doesnt negate some of the poor choices i think he has made.

that said I still think he is doing a great job here.... just wish the ticket prices were a bit more reasonable. And I do like the addidas deal.... always liked their gear because they seem more old school than others (nike). If we get tons more money all the better.

Jag, I agree with you. Byrne raised football prices too quickly. There is no arguing that. I just think its funny that despite what Byrne has done overall to all of our sports programs, so people still think he should be fired.

yeah in not in that boat but i can understand peoples frustration with him..... prices are to a point now where when i can no longer get student tix i very well might stop going to all of the games and only go to 50% and watch the other 50% on tv.

there is one thing and one thing only keeping me from going to all of them and thats the prices. (and i live in b/cs). imagine having to drop another few hundred bucks for gas/eating out every other week.

and to make this nerdy the same thing is happening with the ps3. its too expensive for mass market adoption and its costing sony a ton of sales. people now more than ever are starting to be money conscious (in part due to how much alot of things have incresed in price recently..... gas, dairy products, corn). And the first thing that will be sacrificed is entertainment (where imo sporting event tickets fall into)

Thankfully my Dad is thinking about getting an apartment in CS because his job is near there. That way we can also use it for game weekends instead of having to get a hotel/motel room.

I disagree whole-heartedly

Don't blame Byrne, blame Groff. He did jack **** and didn't even do alot of normal maintence on the stadiums and rarely upgraded anything on the stadiums.
Bill Byrne is having to retool an entire infrastructure after years of mismanagement. He can really only raise money through donations, contracts, and ticket prices. Aggies would flip if he sold naming rights, so he is stuck witk only two sources. That and in football half the good seats are taken by students so it's harder to make more with a limited number of great seats

So does that mean at some point once everything is upgraded we're going to get a break on the prices? No.

There will forever be another excuse to raise ticket prices. The only thing that will stop it is when they price most Ags out of the market. Then only the richest Ags will be able to go, and they won't be able to fill up the stadium.

I am a Byrne fan and speaking from someone who got priced out of season tickets (They practically almost doubled on me to 2k/year overall) I still think he is a good find and you can't deny what he is doing overall to almost every sport at A&M.

I also had the (mis)fortune to hear him talk at the SA A&M club. And he is the most arrogant guy you ever met. Everything was "I" did this for you and "I" did this. "I" found this coach. To hear him talk it's like he has no help at all and if he wasn't there then we would be nothing. I instantly hated him, of course.

But thinking about it later, while he would be a POS to know and talk to outside of work I think he's exactly the go-getter we need behind the helm.
