All season long, errors have cost Texas A&M in key situations. During the opening round regionals, however, the error bug afflicted the other team more and allowed Texas A&M to claw it's way out of the loser's bracket and into the winner's circle. In 5 games, A&M opponents commited 14 errors (2.8/game). 10 of those errors were commited by the #2 seeded Louisiana-Lafayette through 3 games. As the Aggies learned all season, errors hurt the chances of winning and A&M never had more errors than the opponent (7 in 5 games) on their way to a 4-1 tournament record.
A&M came out of the gates quickly dispatching the #4 seeded Dolphins of Le Moyne in the opening day action, 7-2. A heart-breaking 5-4 loss the following day against #2 Louisiana-Lafayette dropped Texas A&M to the loser's bracket and put them one loss away from elimination. A&M responded Sunday by pounding Ohio State 10-4 in the early afternoon game which set up a regional championship rematch with Lousiana-Lafayette. Not only did the Aggies have to win, they had to do it twice against the Ragin' Cajuns in order to advance to the Super Regionals against Rice. In Game 1, Texas A&M won 4-1 and set up Monday's elimination game against the Cajuns. Playing in College Station, the fans watched A&M pitch their way into a regional championship with a 5-2 victory.
Not only did errors flip in favor of the Ags, but so did the pitching. All season long, Texas A&M rode the arm of ace pitcher Kyle Nicholson (11-2) to victory after victory. A start by Nicholson usually meant a win for the Ags. However, in Game 2, Kyle Nicholson began to tire going into the 7th and Louisiana-Lafayette tagged him for 3 runs and followed it up with a 1 run homerun in the 8th. Nicholson was the losing pitcher in game 2, and as fate would have it, he'd have the only loss in the Regional round for the Ags. Kirkland Rivers and Gary Campfield tag-teamed against the Ohio State Buckeyes and Scott Migl pitched 7 strong innings in the first win versus the Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday night. All that set the stage for stage for Kyle Theabeau and his elimination game heroics. Kyle pitched a 13 strikeout complete game and propelled the Aggies into the Super Regional round. He didn't allow an earned run and in his complete game, didn't walk a single Cajun batter.
Texas A&M will square off against Rice in the Super Regionals. Rice, also a #1 seeded team, dispatched Baylor and TCU on their way to the Super Regionals. Rice will host the best of 3 series set to start this weekend and the winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
