Didn't see anything posted about this:
Sweet!
There were not really any red-hot issues discussed by football coaches at the Big 12 spring meetings this week in Colorado Springs. We were pleased to learn that ESPN picked up five games that TBS left open. It’s good to see FOX Sports Southwest cooperating on that, and we appreciate them for doing so. Having some more ESPN exposure for Big 12 football is good for us.
Also interresting stats re: teams who are committed to running the ball:
Defenses are built on stopping the run first. Offenses are built on establishing the run first. Here’s a little statistical information our staff looked up to illustrate the point:
Among the final 25 ranked teams last season, just four had more passes than running plays. The highest-ranked was No. 4 USC with 447 passes, 416 runs.
The others – Notre Dame (471 p, 423 r), Boston College (459 p, 437 r), and Tennessee (415 p, 382 r), none of them Top 10. As you can see, even the best teams that pass more still strive for balance.
No. 1 Florida was among the teams throwing the most passes, 399, but the Gators ran the ball 476 times.
(Keep in mind that scrambles and sacks on called pass plays count as runs in the stats.)
Among the eight teams who ran most and averaged over 200 yards rushing, four were ranked. You might be surprised to learn that No. 5 Boise State, perceived to be “wide open,” was the highest-ranked team committed to the run, with 551 rushing plays to 214 passes. The other BCS-ranked teams with 200 or more rushing yards a game – West Virginia, Arkansas, and us.
Navy led the nation in rushing at 327 yards a game. They ran 764 times and passed just 112 in 13 games, and finished dead last in the NCAA, 119th, in passing offense. Navy runs the spread-bone.
