Being the 3rd best team in the pool didn't mean much to Texas A&M. Losing the first game to Nebraska 5-3 didn't really phase them much either. Riding a little luck and some good baseball, they reeled off two straight wins, including a 7-3 win over Big XII Regular Season, and intra-state rival, Texas. With the 7-2 win over Kansas State, and Texas' 5-4 win over Nebraska, Texas A&M was assured a spot in Sunday's championship - thanks to owning the head to head tie-breaker with Texas.
Craig Stinson was probably the offensive MVP for the Aggies. Recording RBI's in each of the 3 games (including 4 vs Texas), he was a consistent performer in the heart of the A&M lineup. Most importantly though, and a promising sign, A&M won both games without commiting one error. Anybody who's followed Aggie baseball this season realizes that errors have plagued this team at the most inopportune times. There are those that would even say it cost A&M at least 3 W's in the win column (at least). With that said, A&M's overcome some pretty high obstacles to be where they are right now. This is a team that wasn't even invited to last year's Big XII Tournament.
There now stands one more hurdle between A&M and the conference tournament crown. That hurdle, most likely, will be the Baylor Bears who came in seeded #6. Baylor will be 3-0 in Big XII Tournament play and looking to upset the Aggies in the winner take all finale.
The game will air Sunday at 1 PM on Fox Sports Southwest -- and either Baylor or Texas A&M will win their first Big XII tournament championship. Previous winners include:
1997 - Oklahoma
1998 - Texas Tech
1999 - Nebraska
2000 - Nebraska
2001 - Nebraska
2002 - Texas
2003 - Texas
2004 - Oklahoma State
2005 - Nebraska
2006 - Kansas
Texas A&M took the season series from Baylor 2-1.
