Drivers who want to bargain-hunt for inexpensive gas should instead check out Web sites like Gasbuddy.com, which allows consumers to find the cheapest gas in their area simply by entering their zip code.

great site!

It's probably a myth that goes back to the days when cars were equipped with carburetors, but many drivers believe that starting up and turning off your car repeatedly is a fast way to drain your gas tank.

I did not know this...I usually leave my car running if i'm going to be in/out within 5 or so minutes...

yeah most of that stuff i knew but still good info....

still surprised how many people accelerate off the line too fast when the next light 50 yards down is still red and then have to wait anyways. thats what blows more gas than anything.

In CS though there really isnt a need for gasbuddy.... all of the places are about the same here and krogers in CS and the walmart in bryan are almost always the cheapest.

Removing excess weight from your car can also help save you gas. The Department of Energy estimates that drivers can save anywhere between 3 and 6 cents a gallon (assuming gas prices of $2.97 a gallon) just by removing those golf clubs and other unnecessary weight from your trunk.

again...lose some weight you fat-asses!!! ;)

I have a diesel truck and always leave it running if I am going to be somewhere for just a few minutes. I am guessing they are strictly talking about gas vehicles in this article.

97 - you should leave it running. Although it has more to do with exhaust temp than gas mileage. Exhaust temp on diesels should be allowed to cool off before turning the engine off.

Don't you mean before turning the engine on?

No, it is not good for the engine to be turned off while the exhaust temps are hot. The engine should be allowed to idle for a period of time to allow the exhaust temps to return to normal (idle temp). Therefore if you are just stopping somewhere for a short period of time, leave it running.

If you dont have an exhaust temp readout in the cab then it is just a guessing game.
