i would explain in detail what hapened but its pretty technical..... basically i was hoping we could do our initial drive backup while the server was online but it cant. robably going to have to take the site comletly offline (the database mainly) sometime this week or weekend. hoefully once we do the initial backup we can start doing the subsequent ones when the server is online.

i noticed it at about 5 this morning, but I just took it as a sign that I needed to go to bed.

yeah that was related to this.... and for any guests you should now be able to read this. there was one table that was corrupted earlier that needed to be fixed (which i didnt notice until vly txt msged me)
but in the long run these pains now will be worth it.... but trying to get a backup solution running while trying to keep the server online is a pita.

Ok, was it down about 30 mins ago, or was it just my compute? I could not get to Aggiefans cause of a "database error" for a little while.

yeah thats the error the backup program caused... one table got corrupted and i didnt know it because i wasnt seeing that error.

i warned you.... basically the downtime last weekend was to add a 2nd 250 gig drive to the server and what we are in the process of doing is building redundancy into the server so a hard drive failure wont kill the site for more than an hour or so. but we are actually doing the backup a bit differently than the traditional way (raid). Our way is also going to give us a 24hr lead time in the event we get hacked or something of that nature. But to get the automated backup going we need to make a full bit perfect copy of our main HD and then we run a secondary script that just compares the changes between the 2 drives and copies over whatever files it needs. but i was hoping we wouldnt have to take the server down to make this initial copy because it takes about 2.5 hrs to do. But it causes problems (like i was afraid but figured it was going to happen) with the mysql server.
So we are going to have to schedule some downtime somewhat soon of ~3hrs. It will probably be 1AM or something like that and then turn the site back on when I wake up the next morning.
