Texas A&M defeated Dallas Baptist University 14-6 in front of 3800 fans Saturday afternoon. The win completed the 3-game sweep of the Patriots and helped keep A&M on track to try and earn a coveted national seed come playoff time.
David Newmann survived a rocky first inning and pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 runs and earning his 8th win of the season. All 4 runs against Newmann came in the top of the first. Aided by a bases loaded walk and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at second, DBU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and looked to put pressure on Texas A&M in the final game of the series. A&M quickly responded and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2.
The game was broken open in the 3rd and 5th innings as A&M posted 6 runs in each inning. In the 3rd inning, A&M scored 6 runs with only 2 hits in the entire inning (5 were scored by wild pitches or walks). In the 5th, all 6 runs came on 2 out, 2-run homeruns by Stouffer, C. Stinson and Carter.
The story of the game was the strike zone. DBU's pitchers just couldn't find it as they issued 12 walks while only racking up 5 strikeouts during the entire game. They used 6 pitchers total, 4 of which were abused and gone by the 5th inning.
With the win, Texas A&M improves to 12-9 in Big XII play. They remain a half game back of Oklahoma State (who won Saturday vs OU) and 2 games back of Missouri (which plays Sunday vs Texas). A&M travels to Kansas State next week -- a middle of the pack, but dangerous baseball team that's won 6 of their last 10 games. They have a late-scheduled game vs McNeese State following that and then a season finale series versus the inner-state rival Texas Longhorns.
