El Gallito de Jalisco...I-10 headed west, exit Wurzbach Rd, will see HEB on the right, turn left Wurzaback under I-10, El Gallito is on left side about a 1/4 mile up, cheap and good! Also, Sandy's Tortillas at HEB where the eggs are, tortillas are uncooked, set cast iron skillet to med low heat cook for 30-45 sec, like homemade!

Esta con madere ese!!!!

Yeah buddy... I used to eat there all the time.... We used to live over behind the Huebner Oaks Shopping Area.....

Was to much of a comute to Lackland & fighting traffic was more of a hassle than it was worth...

But yeah, every now & then on a weekend where we have nothing planned... well make a lil trip over that way & get some really good food....

My wife Didn't believe me that "El Gallito" meant "The Chicken".... she didn't think anyone would just flat out call their restaurant "The Chicken" until she asked one of the people working there....LOL.....

Man I'm surprised you've heard of it, it is a hole in the wall, love the mexican food plate for $5. I was there recently, since I have zero mexican food over here, I think I ate at El Gallito at least once every day I was in SA!!!!

I was also trying to find good Chicken Fried Steak, but no one seemed to know of a good place, I grew up in Zapata, TX and we have a place called El Pariso, that sell's damn good chicken fried steak, so my family always compares to that and according to them nothing in SA matches up, so I ended up going to Luby's to get my cfs fix!!!!! it was good, love the mac and cheese from Luby's!!!

Chicken Fried Steak is one meal I don't think San Antonio has a place that I would call a 5 Star Chicken Fried Steak Restaurant....

I haven't really found one either.. been living here since May 99' & still can't find one...

Although I do know of some good ones down in the Rio Grande Valley... :gig:

Agreed. Or go to Austin/San Marcos. Much better Mexican food then San Antonio.

Actually I use to think that forever but lately it seems like every Mexican Restraunt I go to in SA is throwing the same traditional Tex-mex crap at me. There are a few standouts but it's mainly the same crap at every single one.

While in Austin lately I have been getting some good "traditional" mexican food. I don't know.... unless something else comes up in SA I'm going to have to give the nod to Austin. I don't want to piss off any of the mexican cooks but I think they need to take some cooking lessons and stop trying to make an easy buck.

FYI: Speaking of Tex Mex it begins and end in this jewel in San Marcos:

Best tex mex ever! There is NOTHING in SA that compares to this place.

Blasphemy!!!! this is a crime and should be punishable by law!!;)

Traditional mexican food is a relative term, traditional to what part of the country??? Northern Mexico, Central Portion, Southern part, coast regions huge, huge, huge difference in the food. Enchilada in northern mexico=unrecognizable food in southern portion, liable to be met with a WTF is that:wow: !
