It's not all luck... The distance depends on when you kick the ball, and how high the ball was in the air. Look at John's replay and see how high above the monkey's head it got before he kicked it.

When I'm watching the video replay of your kick, the ball is going much higher above the monkey's head before your kick than what I can get.
