Ouch. That will put a dent in their ERA. They gave up 57 runs and 44 hits in only 7 innings.

At what point do you just call the game?

They called it after 7 innings. That is the run rule in college. I guess the other coach could have forfeited and quit, but that would have been worse than just playing it out IMO.

The largest margin of victory ever in a soccer game was 2-0.

That school should seriously consider dropping baseball.

I read in another article that this is their first year of ever having a baseball team, so I'm sure that explains it a little. Not exactly going to bring in blue chip talent in your first year as a Division III school.

Yeah, but it sounds like I could make their team, and I haven't played since teeball.

Interesting. I didn't think they would have a run rule in college.

According to NCAA rules, if by conference rule or mutual consent of both coaches before the game begins, the game can be called after 7 innings if a team is up by 10 or more runs.

The 2002 World Cup was the first to be held in Asia, and was hosted jointly by Japan and South Korea. Togolese Souleymane Mamam became the youngest player ever to take to a World Cup preliminary game field at 13 years, 310 days in Lomé in May 2001. Australia defeated American Samoa 31-0 in a preliminary match - a new record for the margin of victory, and the highest-scoring match ever. fify pflug

Here is a very cool article about this baseball team. I love articles like this. I didn't realize that 12 of the 16 players on the team didn't even play HS baseball. This is just a bunch of guys that love the game playing college ball together.

I read it. Excellent story.

Those guys will never forget the first time they put on that jersey. These are the stories people need to read in order to love baseball. There is so much more to the game than the game itself. It's the nicknames, the learning, the roadtrips, it's all a part of the game.
Congrats, Nighthawks.

You're exactly right Bobcat. That is why I posted it. People who really love the game of baseball will really like that article.

Go find an article about soccer players and how they are taking up too much of the world's supply of orange slices and capri suns.

Football season can't come soon enough. Life sucks when baseball and soccer are your only options. At least the NBA playoffs are still going on...

Ugh, I hate the NBA. Watching the Rockets in the playoffs quickly reminded me why I stopped watching the NBA. As much as I like to bitch about Big 12 officiating, I would much rather have that then the crappy officiating that goes on in the NBA. Seeing those guys play street ball and foul every play with no call is too frustrating to watch.

Watch NBA games from the 90s (when the NBA was at it's best). Fouls were called MUCH less, and the game was better. Back then, big men dominated the league. Now, they are crippled with constant foul calls. The problem with the NBA is that whistles are blown too much.

Completely disagree that whistles are blown too much. There are major offensive fouls on every possession that never get called.

great story about newbury college. i hope they stick with it.

i can't help but wonder, though... only four guys who played high school ball? seems like they should at least be able to field a team that has some high school or legion experience.

being in new england, i'm sure they'll get there... it's a great area for baseball.

They didn't know that they were going to field a team until the middle of the semester. So, they could not recruit anyone and just had to use sudents that were already in school. That school has less than 1000 students, so I can't imagine the selection was very big!
