Mark Turgeon - The process started late Friday and Early Saturday. 98% chance he is the coach
1. With 100% certainity, he was one of two guys Bryne looked at day 1.
2. Saturday it came down to Turgeon and Sadler (the #3 guy on the list)
3. He came very highly recommended by Roy Williams.
4. Played under Larry Brown. Coached under Larry Brown and Roy williams at Kansas, and Larry Brown at the 76ers.
5. At WSU they got better each year. He built a program there and sustained it. They beat Tenn, LSU, and Syracuse with inferior talent. HE recruited Texas well and developed players well.
6. He should keep Alvin Brooks. Brooks wants to coach in Texas.
7. He has been a head coach for 7 years.
8. Jamie Dixon - was never really interested and we never made a serious effort
Majerus - Didn't want him at all.
Lon Kruger - He was interesting, he would want to go to the Big 10. He is Big 10 guy and would have used us as a stepping stone.
9. Don't believe that players want to leave. When BCG was hired Pompey, Wright and Law wanted to leave, but decide to stay after meeting with him. At this point none of the recruits have been released and Turgeon will have to re-recruit the recruits to some degree.
Billy Gillispie
Loochs Opinion
I liked Billy as a coach. He made basketball relavent here and nationally.
Top 10 basketball coach in the country
He didn't handle it well. Without the Arkansas stuff happening, it wouldn't be nearly as bad
Arkie was convinced Billy would take the job, it gave the perception that he wanted out. Pat Foster thought he was going to Arkie.
Looch is 100% convinced that BCG was prepared to be the coach here next year, but wanted the Kentucky job. Several guys were told they were #2 for the UK job.
Questions from the Tap
What kind of program is Turgeon getting?
He has to keep this unit together. It has the potential to be great. 3 starters combined with 3 stud freshman, and Davis, Roland, and Elonu. Davis was a nationally ranked guy, Roland is an incredible athlete, and Elonu is a freak athlete that is learning the game. This team was built carefully and Turgeon needs to sustain it.
Practice Facility?
Best in the country. It will cost more than the Bright Complex.
What style does Turgeon play?
Man to man Defense
Motion Offense - like OU's offense
Gillispie and Bryne Fallout
I've read and heard everything. This whole deal strained the relationship, but I don't the extent. Its like bad breakup with a gf. The strain came from that Gillispie put himself out there twice in a row. It put out there that Billy wanted to leave and people would recruit against us with that. All differences could have been mended eventually if he stayed.
Releasing Players
Billy said he doesn't think you can do conditional releases. IE you can't go here but everywhere is ok. Elonu was released everywhere but A&M, tu, or UH.
Bill Byrne will not release anyone if he has to do unconditionally. He won't watch Deandre play for Texas or UK.
Looch doesn't think any of the important returning players leave, if anybody someone who never plays that would have left even if Gillispie returned.
WSU fell off, why?
Senior laden team. They beat two teams that went to FF last year. The problem was interplayer relationships, IE bad chemistry, because of what one star senior did.
Did Gillispie call to come back?
No
He called on the plane to UK when he was just interviewing, to see if he had still had a job to come back too. If UK turned him down of course.
