Gillispie Leaves Aggieland
http://www.usabasketball.com/headshotsmen/gillispie_billy.jpgBill Byrne and the Aggie Athletic Dept. held the wolves off for as long as possible but in the end Kentucky was just too much. It is being reported that the man Aggie Fans affectionately call Billy Clyde has accepted the Kentucky head coaching position and it will be announced at a press conference this afternoon. In a way it is sort of like dating the cute girl in Jr. High that turns out to be the smoking hottie and leaves you for the starting qb that happens to be the coaches son.
The loss couldn't have come at a worse time for A&M with spring signing day just a couple of weeks down the road and now no coach it'll make it hard to keep anyone that came here because of what Gillispie did. It will also be hard to keep the great class that just signed from seeking releases especially superstar big man DeAndre Jordan.
Bill Byne now has the un-enviable task of catching lightning in a bottle twice after his hire of Gillispie proved to be so successful he will be expected to find someone that can continue to ride the wave of momentum that Gillispie left. Or is it a tsunami that will crush whoever fills his shoes? The instant success that Gillispie had has created somewhat inflated expectations from fans and it will take some hard work to keep them satisfied.

I know that A&M did not want to keep him on duty if he wanted to go elsewhere, but there should be some penalty to be paid by someone for these continued breaches of contract by coaches. I just cannot understand it. Can someone please explain it too me? What was in his contract that gave him the power to break it without paying a penalty?

I agree.... it's not like I can just up and say.... Ya know what... I like that Army more today... sorry Air Force.. I know I signed for 6 years... but I am gonna hold a press conference & make it known I am no longer "Stepping Into The Blue", but instead "I Am An Army Of One"....

Well, essentially, we let him out of his contract! Do we have to? No! But like you said, what good does it do a school to keep a coach who doesn't want to be here? I'm no contract guru or anything, but from the way I understand, he isn't "breaking" his contract! He asked to go somewhere else & we said okay!

ants in his pants ... there has to be some penalty
I would like to see his contract. I bet I could come up with some penalty provisions that would put the school in a better position than they are now when the next coach has ants in his pants.

absolutely nothing. most of these contracts, not that i am an expert on contracts but, are written as something to the fact of "an at will employement". therefore the term of the contract means absolutely nothing. the coach can leave any time they want and they can be terminited any time the admin feels necessary.

that is a completely different type of contract.

Right, Z, but if the school terminates they still owe the terms of the contract & if the coach leaves he owes nothing. Its a very one-sided deal!

Yes, but when the school terminates it continues to paid. When the coach terminates he pays nothing and the school continues to pay. What is right about that? I think that the schools that believe that they need someone else's coach need to pay, period. The NCAA needs to put a stop to this dumb sheeeeeeeeet. Sorry. They jump all over these kids and they cannot do anything with these coaches that have no character.

So basically... when it comes to coaching... it's no different than working at Wal-Mart or Lowe's.....
Your there until you want leave or until they get tired of you.....

It does bring up the question of why even bother with a contract. Or at least with a timelength in the contract.

In 2 years... BCG will leave for the UNC job.... Then 1.5 years later will bolt for the NBA & coach the Clippers, 2 years later coach the Lakers, then 2 years later coach Heat, Then 2 years later coach the Pistons, then 2 years later coach the Suns, & so on & so on.......

that is probably true, but it all depends on how the contract is structured. in my job i deal with a lot of contracts, but again not an expert, it just depends on which party does a better job of negotiating what they want into the contract. i believe we owed RC money after he was canned. did we owe anything to watkins when he was? and johnson? since they were from the old admin i am sure we did, but we dont really know how BB is structuring these newer contracts. it would be very interesting to read BCG's contract to see.
