i don't know why people are so surprised about this... the way they have it set up I'd have to say that it's the best strategy at this point in the season... i'd be pissed if they weren't losing on purpose because then they wouldn't be using the best strategy :undecided::undecided:
thoughts???

The Spurs did it the year Robinson was hurt...
SA gave it a good try until the All Star break that year, once it was obvious that the playoffs were out of reach, they tanked the year, gave some other players some quality time & that also allowed them to pick up Tim Duncan..

I don't think it matters if they lose on purpose or not. I'm convinced that whole lottery thing is rigged anyway. If it was so legit, then why not draw those freaking ping-pong balls out in front of everyone? Why must it be conducted behind closed doors?

I agree that it is rigged. How else did Houston (the city with the largest Chinese population in the US) just happen to get Yao when they were quite a long shot for the first pick?

and how is this any different than Rose betting on baseball?

One person vs. an entire league. Way different!

in both situations a person or person(s) are dictating who wins and who loses

Yes, but its not of the same magnitude. You are talking about one manager of one team out of something like 28 teams at the time vs. an entire league holding a "random" lottery drawing behind closed doors.

A basketball team(s) loses on purpose so they can benefit from the draft
Notice I put an "s" after team
Its wrong, its cheating and I personally dont see any real differences in this and what Rose did (my opinion)

I'm not talking about basketball teams losing on purpose. I said earlier that doesn't matter because the Lottery is rigged. Read all my posts on this topic.

I read the topic Jeff & the topic is irrellevant. Who cares how many games you lose if the League determines who gets the #1 overall pick?

We had the fifth-best chance of the 14 lottery teams to win the first pick. It wasn't that much of a long shot.

is the team with the worst record most likely to get the first pick... i always thought they had the best chance

Here are the odds, from worst to least bad:
1. 250 combinations, 25% chance of receiving #1 pick
2. 199 combinations, 19.9% chance
3. 156 combinations, 15.6% chance
4. 119 combinations, 11.9% chance
5. 88 combinations, 8.8% chance
6. 63 combinations, 6.3% chance
7. 43 combinations, 4.3% chance
8. 28 combinations, 2.8% chance
9. 17 combinations, 1.7% chance
10. 11 combinations, 1.1% chance
11. 8 combinations, 0.8% chance
12. 7 combinations, 0.7% chance
13. 6 combinations, 0.6% chance
14. 5 combinations, 0.5% chance
The lottery is only used to determine the top 3 picks. Picks 4-14 are in order from worst to least bad.

Yeah, but it obviously doesn't guarantee anything. And yeah, Loftin, Houston had the 5th best odds...but the NBA Lottery is heavily weighted. The team with the worst record has way more balls in the hopper than the team with even the 2nd best record....so the Rockets getting the first pick was either a miracle or a set-up!

And there it is as I was posting about it...thanks, Loftin!

So we had an 8.8% chance of getting Yao. Very lucky, but not so much that I would suspect a conspiracy.

Give me one good reason why it is done behind closed doors!

It would take too long to do on live TV. After the first winner, you'd have to go into all the ball and remove the ones with that team on them (up to 249 balls out of a box of 999).
Remember that the lottery is held during halftime of a second round playoff game...

Are you talking about the lottery drawing being held during halftime or the revealing of the results?
And that it takes too long is absolutely ridiculous! If that truly is their reasoning behind it, then fine...don't do #2 & #3 just do #1. And you don't have to show it live on TV....just do it live in front of all the team representatives & then show it on TV later. Its rigged or else they would do it in the public eye.

I agree. :rep: The owners will do anything to protect the league and their financial interests. They may give up some player to another team in return for some other financial interest. We just do not know what really does go on behind closed doors.
You may not remember, but Broadway Joe was so important to a certain new football league that the owners agreed that no one could hit Joe below the waist to protect his fragile knees.

If they all lose on purpose, then no one gains an advantage. And losing on purpose might increase your odds of getting the higher draft pick, it doesn't guarantee anything. In the NFL however, if you have the worst record at week 13 & you lose on purpose it does guarantee that you get the top draft pick...so why aren't people complaining about the NFL?

Never thought about it in football much. Maybe one player and moving up one spot in the selection is not as significant as it is in basketball.
It is also harder to see the lack of effort in football.

I'll make my call right now that Boston will get the first pick even if they are not the worst team. Boston is a huge TV market and having a crappy Celtics team is bad for the NBA. They will take Durant with the first pick.

it's not cheating... it's the way the game is set up... it's the best strategy under the current rules... and when you're playing by the rules you're not cheating

Throwing a game for future financial gain may not be cheating to win, but it is a fraud against the game and its fans. Just ask some of the dead black sox players when you get to heaven.
