*dont flame*
Ok, I know he betted on baseball. But Ive never been told EXACTLY what he did. Which of the following did he do?
1. Bet that his team would win and go out and try to earn a win?
2. Bet his team would lose, and do things to which his own team would most likely lose?
3. Both or something else?
We've witnessed athletes and so forth IMO do far worse than betting on baseball... again this is my own opinion. Im not a Rose fan, but I never understood all the hype around the story.

he bet on games he was managing. no matter how he bet( if you believe him), its not acceptable.

I dont believe anything he says...
I just never understood how "betting" on a game you manage or play to be so terrible
Everytime I bring this up I get the same answer
"its terrible" ok... why?

if you bet on your team to lose and you are managing that means you can set your team up to lose. you will play the crappiest players in the biggest situations( which he did), if you are managing you can throw the game. You can try to lose.

But what if he always bet on his team to win? What about then? He's trying his best to win every game then and not throwing games.... what next?

i thin he did other stuff too, pinetar ag would probably know more than me. I want to point out though i think pete should be in the hall of fame

we dont know he bet on his team though. its his word against bookies. he lied about doing it at all for 20 years then all the sudden one day he admitted it. now were supposed to believe he bet on his team to win because he said so?
Vlyrock
03-15-2007, 08:07 PM
He admitted it because he thought he'd have a better chance to get into the Hall. He denied for 20 years and the balloters never voted him in. You can call it, reverse psychology...maybe if he 'fessed up (they all suspected it anyways) they'd change their mind?

i think he will get in one day. reguardless though, he broke the rules of the game. its like saying its ok to take steroids cuz the player is just trying to win.

This is the kinda talk I was looking for...
So we dont REALLY know what he did? If so, Id assume he bet them to lose at times which is wrong. (leaving pitchers in to long etc...)
Vlyrock
03-15-2007, 08:16 PM
yeah, or he bet on other teams (which is wrong)....

i think there was a point in which he was betting on every team in baseball, it wasnt until he was going broke he started to bet on the reds.

I think he should've played it smart (and safe) and bet only on other sports...
I mean seriously, you take a bookie for $1 million and you don't think he'll blow the whistle on you so he doesn't have to pay? Sure, I'll be your bookie Petey, when you lose, I win money. When you win money, I'll make sure you get caught so you don't get to go to the Hall. Unfortunatley for Pete, he never won enough money for that to happen.

Okay, Vly...lets break this down. Even if he always bets on his team to win...it still leads to corruption. What if he bets $50 tonight on the Reds, but then bets $2500 on the Reds the next night? Or vice versa! He could always be betting on the Reds but trying a whole lot harder to hedge his bets by playing certain players.

But he's never throwing the game (trying to lose). He's not going to throw away $50. He may not be as confident he can win (which is the lower bet), but he's still betting on his team and trying to win.

he can not be voted into the hall and has never even been on a ballot to have the chance. he is banned from baseball. the hall's by laws state anyone who is "banned" from baseball is not eligile to be on a ballot.

For the record. and Im sure Ill get flamed for this. But I dont see ANYTHING wrong with betting on you're team to win and going out each night trying you're best to win
and Im not saying Pete did that either

I didn't say that
Im saying...
"Ill put $100 on my Reds tonight" then go out and manage you're tail off for the win

betting on baseball if you are a player, manager, front office or owner is basically like one of the 7 deadly sins.

yeah yeah yeah... we hear this all the time
now you personally tell me why you think its so terrible *if I or anyone manages a team and bets his team will win and do his best to make them win*

first, i will say there is too much we do not know or can believe with what rose says. as for my opinion, when a player, manager, etc bet on the the game, there are too many variables to consider. you dont know if they are betting on their team to win or lose. if they are betting on their team to win - WHY? do they have a deal with another player(s) on the other team so they throw the game? if they bet on their team to lose - WHY? are they or the rest of the players on the team planning to throw the game..... are they pissed at their manager for something and they want to get back at him..... are they pissed b/c they are getting traded.... are they pissed b/c they feel they are underpaid..... there is just too much that could go into it and each person's own motives and integrity have to be questioned for betting on the game.

For a guy like Rose, betting $50 is throwing it away if he normally bets $1000s.
And, even if he always bets the same amount on his team, he is still compromising the game. If he is involved in the game & gambling & he gets down 10s of thousands of $$$$s & he can't pay. What do you think the bookie will suggest to repay his debt? "Hey, Pete, we need you to shave a couple here....throw your best stuff at 'em here....etc." He is at the mercy of the bookies.

1. I already said I dont believe a thing Rose says
2. They bet on they're team because they are either addicted to gambling or have the confidence in they're team. (or both)
3. They bet on they're team to lose because they're addicted to gambling or a total dirt bag/cheater or both
