Bo was good but Jim Thorpe is the best all around sports athlete. He never practiced anything was just that good.

bo was good at multiple sports but few people have dominated their sport like mj, tiger, or nolan

Lance Armstrong was pretty damned dominate.

Even though everyone knows he cheated. All professional cyclist cheat.
Why do you think so many die of heart attacks at such a young age.

BAGGIO
03-15-2007, 05:09 PM
yeah thats true. but lance has retired, tiger might have his best years ahead of him. no athlete has controlled his sport like tiger. i also want to throw ted williams into the mix, simply amazing stats.

zrf2002
03-15-2007, 05:21 PM
i dont think you can call someone who dominates one sport the greatest athlete of all time whether it is tiger, mj, whoever.

i agree w/ jim thorpe.

Burnetaggie99

A Athlete is someone who kicks ass in many sports like Jim Thorpe and Bo Jackson. You are picking guys that were the best at 1 thing only and that dosn't count.

BAGGIO
03-15-2007, 05:32 PM
i thought an athlete was someone who played A sport. if youre going for a bi or tri athlete i would say bo knows baseball, bo knows football

If you are going to go with Thorpe, then you can't leave out Babe Diedrickson Zaharias! She dominated more sports (and even against the men) than Thorpe did. I'm not saying that Thorpe isn't a worthy candidate, but she deserves mention too....plus, she was a TX girl (the term, girl, being used very loosely.)

BAGGIO

bo jackson career batting average .250, not that amazing. i know he was good at football too.

BAGGIO
03-15-2007, 05:43 PM
a was saying that an athlete does not play multiple sports, he plays atleast one. being mediocre at 5 sports does not make you a better athlete than someone who dominates 1 sport. Check what facts? what are you talking about? All im saying is I would rather have Ted Williams on the Astros that Bo Jackson on the Astros and Texans.

Burnetaggie99
03-15-2007, 05:44 PM
When I say Athlete I mean a man or woman that can excel at any sport. MJ was the greatest Basketball player, Tiger ( Jack Nicklaus) in golf, Ali in boxing, Walter Payton in football. I was taking this thread to be the best all around athlete not just who's the best athlete at their sport.

If you are talking about an athelete being the greatest because of sport domination, then you gotta go with wayne gretsky or maybe lance armstrong. If you are going on athletic ability which does not equate to dominate numbers, I think you would have to go with someone like Bo Jackson or maybe even Jevon Kearse - I don't think anyone has ever had his combination of speed and strength. If you are going on popularity, then it would be MJ, Ali or the Babe.

On a side note: My pick of the most dominate athelete of all time would have to be: Takeru Kobayashi

how many 30 hr seasons did he have? How good of a outfielder was he?

How great of a football player was he?

Bo Jackson had amazing athletic ability, and I would consider him one of the greatest pure athletes of alltime, but not one of the best at any sport he played.

On the flip side, Jerry Rice would be considered a below average athlete when it comes to ability, but he is one of the top 5 greatest football players of all time at a positition that requires athletic skill.

A Heisman Trophy winner as a running back at Auburn, Jackson gained more than 4,300 yards and scored 43 touchdowns in his four seasons at the university. After his selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the number one pick in the 1986 NFL draft, Jackson chose to sign a baseball contract with Kansas City. After less than a year in the minors, Bo found himself in the major leagues for good in 1987. He belted 22 homers and displayed his speed and amazing throwing arm as an outfielder. On one occasion he hurled a ball from the warning track to home plate on the fly. After his first full big league season, Jackson played for the Oakland Raiders, gaining nearly seven yards per carry while finding the end zone four times in seven games. He played both professional baseball and football for four seasons. In 1989, in his only All-Star Game, he crushed a home run in his first at-bat and was named MVP. In the 1990 NFL PLayoffs, he suffered a hip injury that ended his football career. Defying his critics, Jackson returned to baseball after the injury and miraculously played two more seasons for the White Sox and Angels after hip replacement surgery

Bo Jackson stats:

HR's 32, 22, 25, 28 and 16 (his best)
RBI 105, 68 and 78
SB's 27 and 26

The first athlete named an All-Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Star) in both sports.

there are ALOT of mediocre allstars in baseball. You wont convince me a .250 hitter is GREAT at baseball. I wouldnt mind having him on my team, but i could probably think of 20 other guys at his position i would rather have.

blackgloves
03-15-2007, 08:13 PM
When he played there wasnt a out fielder that had a stronger arm. There may not have been a faster and more athletic baseball player in the outfield or on the whole team.

And he could knock it out of the park and steal bases...

Bo Jackson was a barely above average baseball player that was way over hyped because of football and his deal with NIKE.

I think Bo Jackson used his amazing athletic ability to compensate for limited baseball skill. He couldn't hit, but when he connected, he could hit the ball further than anyone else. Yeah, he was faster than anyone else, but didn't put up Rickey Henderson like stolen base numbers because he was never on base to steal. I will say that he was a great fielder with a tremendous arm, but I think you could put any number of really athletic nfl running backs with baseball experience and they would put up the same numbers as Bo.

i think Dave Winfield should be mentioned..... he is the only person to be drafted in 3 professional sports - football, baseball and basketball. of course he made his career in baseball and is a hall of famer, but that is a pretty damn good athlete to be the only person to be drafted in each sport he excelled in.

I like that...

the only weigh I debate that is.

he never played or played very little at the other sports at the pro level?

We had athletes at A&M that lettered numerous times in numerous sports...

Im saying, whos the greatest athlete? And to prove you're a great athlete you must prove yourself at the highest level.

Winfield didn't do that

they say Tracy McGrady can throw a 90 mph fastball and you know what he does on the basketball court

Im sure he would make a average or above average baseball player

but he has NEVER played on inning of baseball

there for his baseball skills are not valid/for this convo

no he did not.... but how many people in the history of pro sports have even had the chance. none. winfield is the only one to be drafted in 3 pro sports. he chose baseball.... i dont know why, but he obviously made a good decision having a long career and is now in the baseball hof.

I like the Winfield suggestion. He chose one out of 3 so he could focus & become a HOF at that one sport, yet he had the choice between all of the big 3. Thats hard to argue against.

agree to a certain degree

but like I said, he never proved himself at any of those sports at the greatest level.

Remember how Tellus threw his name in the hat to be drafted and then pulled it? Yeah.... looking back that was a smart move

How do we know it woulda been any different with Winfield? he coulda been a bust at the other 2 sports if drafted

just a thought guys...
