Blair Announces 2005-06 A&M Hoops Schedule (http://aggieathletics.com/pressRelease.php?PRID=10042)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M’s women’s basketball 2005-06 schedule features nine teams that played in last season’s NCAA Tournament, three that played in the postseason WNIT, and two teams that will play in the preseason WNIT according to the schedule released by the school Thursday.

After reaching postseason play in the WNIT last season for the first time since 1996, A&M coach Gary Blair said he put together a schedule that will help position the Aggies to reach the NCAA Tournament.

“We positioned ourselves after a WNIT season last year for some risk reward this season,” Blair said. “Our goal is to get to the NCAA tournament. To get there you have to play a better non-conference schedule. We have done that by adding Washington and Rice.”

Blair said that the risk-reward is coupling a tough Big 12 Conference slate with a challenging non-conference schedule. A&M was one of eight teams in the league to reach the postseason last year. Six teams (Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech) played in the NCAA Championship with Baylor capturing the national championship.

A&M’s non-conference schedule will feature home games against a pair of NCAA participants in defending Ivy League Champion Dartmouth and defending WAC Champion Rice while six Big 12 opponents will visit Reed Arena on the heels of a NCAA appearance.

The Aggies will also play host to Eastern Washington which is participating in the preseason WNIT.

The season will open with a game against Saint Peters on Nov. 21.

A&M will travel to two tournaments in the non-conference portion of the schedule. During Thanksgiving, the Aggies will be at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic for three games. Possible opponents include NCAA participant DePaul, Cal State Northridge, Eastern Michigan, Hawaii, Idaho State, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

After hosting games with Washington and Sam Houston State, the Aggies will participate in a tournament at UNLV in Las Vegas in mid-December.

At UNLV, the Aggies will face Detroit Mercy before facing either Jackson State or host UNLV.

Then on Dec. 21 and 22, the Aggies will host back-to-back games with Dartmouth and Eastern Washington.

“We have some tough stretches in terms of games in a row especially in December with Vegas a day off and then two in a row,” Blair said.

The Dartmouth game will feature the return of College Station native and A&M Consolidated High School product Angie Soriaga.

After a Christmas break, the Aggies will host Utah State and Arkansas-Little Rock. The non-conference schedule will wrap on Jan. 2 with Rice at Reed Arena.

The Aggies will host Big 12 games with Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech.

A&M will travel to Baylor, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech.

“Twice we get to play defending National Champions Baylor,” Blair said. “That does not happen very often.”

Blair noted that facing Texas and Oklahoma twice will also be a challenge, but he said his recent signing class should bolster the Aggies chances.

“Texas and Oklahoma had the one and two recruiting class in the country,” Blair said. “When you look at us, we had the number three class in the Big 12.”

Three of Blair’s incoming signees are having impressive summers on the court.

Takia Starks is playing in the THSGCA All-Star Game in Austin this week and will play in the Texas and Oklahoma All-Star game next week.

Oklahoma player of the year Danielle Gant and Latoya Micheaux just got back from separate events. Gant’s team won the AAU National Championship for 17 and under while Micheaux played for Houston Elite in AAU action in Atlanta.

Exact dates for Big 12 action will be announced in late August or early September.

Ticket information for the upcoming season is available via the Athletic Ticket Office at 979-845-2311.

Last season, the Aggies set several attendance marks including total fans and single season average.

NOTES—The Aggies will host exhibition games against Athletes In Action on Nov. 13 and will host a professional team from Houston on a date to be determined.

Women's basketball is not basketball. Not to be a hater or anything, but this belongs in the "Other Sports" forum.
