Dan Hawkins' Rant: What He Really Said
Dan Hawkins' rant was comedic relief on American radio a couple of weeks ago. But there might not be anything funny to college football coaches if the NCAA is paying attention to what the Colorado trail boss really said.
When he went off while talking about a letter he received from a CU player's parent, he might have admitted more than he planned.
Hawkins' explosion was clear testimony that there is nothing voluntary about off season workouts. Volunteer to go through the program, or volunteer to give up your scholarship.
The NCAA is always touting its efforts to improve the lot of athletes. Then give them relief from voluntary-mandatory workouts. Ban all university personnel from monitoring the workouts. Stop the wink-wink nature of these workouts.
Hawkins said it clearly. NCAA athletes are granted vacation. Otherwise, their time is not their own.
