With their being talks of Title XII lawsuits being filed against universities for discriminatory hiring practices (because of the lack of black head coaches in Div 1 football) -- I got to thinking.

Okay, so there's only 6 of 119 black head coaches. But how many black assistant coaches are there? Van Malone at Texas A&M as one...

I bet the percentage is significantly higher....

So, it's not that they're upset about not enough black people being coaches, they're just upset that not enough black people are the top coach of the program...

I have no stats to back up my thoughts here, but I'm curious what the numbers are.

I really hate the "not enough black coaches" talk. With the big money that college athletics creates, schools are going to hire the most capable person available for jobs. I think in the past this was a problem but it is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

The prevalence of black assitant coaches is a good indicator of what is going to happen in the head coaching jobs. You can't just suddenly hire black head coaches that don't have experience as assistants. As the assistants get more experience they will become the future head coaches at major programs.

If there is a lawsuit forcing schools to hire black coaches I think it will backfire because any coach hired in that position will be looked at under a magnifying glass. If it happens naturally it will be much more beneficial.

It's a complicated subject You want to hire the most qualified candidate, but at the same time, the opportunities are, or at least have been, much more limited for minorities. Good minority coaches didn't get as many chances to come up through the ranks and thus never got enough experience or exposure to become head coach. And remember, there is still a "good 'ol boys" mentality at many schools. A&M was like that with RC and Wally though isn't like that any more (IMO), but many schools still have it.

I'd take a black head football coach today. But then again, I'd take a head football coach of any color today...

sad that a pretty good thread turned into a canfran thread...
turning it back around...

I'd be interested in how they intend to enforce this...who will they "force" to have a black head coach...and why just black (if this is so)???
