Run and Gun NCAA Basketball Champion ... Who Was the First?

What school produced the first NCAA Basketball Champion that was a run and gun offensive team?

Rep awaits for the correct answer.

Nothing to do with Oklahoma other than this team played in Oklahoma the year before it won the NCAA Championship.

it is legel so I'll say osu or ou or something ;)

The team had nothing to do with an Oklahoma team other than it played in Oklahoma the year before its championship run. I saw them play in person.

Whoever got the defensive rebound got to shot it at the other end. :)

More hints later if needed.

UnLV won in 1990 but they were not the first.

Oh yes, guessing will not win. You must have something to back it up.

I expected that there would be those that would not care to look it up, but I did not expect someone would admit it. :stupid:

It really should not take much effort with the information available on the Internet.

I am should there will be someone that will not want to continue their ignorance about a team that made basketball history and broke down significant social barriers at the same time.

Don't look it up. I am sure someone will. This is something that most basketball fans know about the history of the game. The one's that don't know should know.

The starting point guard for this team was named John.

This team had another first in NCAA Basketball Division I History.

What this team did now occurs daily now on basketball courts everywhere.

Certainly. Remember I witnessed the first of this team's historical performances. The first took place in Oklahoma City.

The coach of this team rarely took his starters out of games after the team lost two of their best bench players to academic ineligibility. Sportswriters gave the five starters a nickname for their endurance.

This championship game was one of the most thrilling games in NCAA history.

This team's star player, an All-American, was held scoreless with less than 15 minutes left in the second half.

There have been 67 NCAA Basketball Champions since the first in 1939.
13 teams have won this championship two or more times.
This team has won it only once. I believe that narrows it down to just 21 teams.

After some thought on the matter, I have decided that the reward that I offered was possibly not significant enough for some. Since I am fairly new to the forum, my reps are obviously not worth much in numerically value.

Therefore, the reward for the right answer will be 10 reps from me over an appropriate time period allowed by the forum. I hope this will produce a winner of this "quiz" on the history of NCAA basketball.

Aggies should know something about previous NCAA basketball champions, especially when they will have one of their own soon. :)

More clues later today, if needed.

Loyola

I am assuming you are referring to Loyola University Chicago in 1963. Then you are correct.

In 1962, for the first time in NCAA Div I history Coach George Ireland put five black players on the floor in a game in Oklahoma City against Wyoming. When John Egan, the team's 5'11" point guard fouled out and was replaced in this game, all hell broke loose and those present saw a real scoring machine.

Their second round opponent in the 1963 tournament, Mississippi State, was a late addition because sports programs representing Mississippi schools were not allowed to play integrated teams. Coach Babe McCarthy stole his team to the tournament under the cover of darkness before an injunction could be served prohibiting the Maroons from playing the Ramblers.

I will try. I really thought the question would be answered fairly quickly, and then there would be some discussion about what the team had done and how it helped break the soicial barriers of our country.
