Hockey Gives a Little Reason to take Notice
http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/apphoto/NYDD11002230402.jpgLike most people raised in Texas and elsewhere in America I never really understood hockey. Sure it is a real sport that requires great physical ability and strength. But to me it was all aboot mullets and throwing octupi and hats out onto the ice. Last night hockey reminded me why it was at least tolerable and deserves the occasionaly highlight.
It happened during the second period of the Ottawa Senators vs Buffalo Sabers when Senator, Chris Niel, took out the Saber Co-Captain Chris Drury with a late hit from behind that went un-noticed. Sabers coah, Lindy Ruff, declined to comment at first after the game but then added, "Go out and run 'em". I mean the guys dad named him Lindy so that had to make him pretty mean to get by and then top it off his last name is Ruff. If that doesn't tell you what he had in mind then you just need to quit trying.
So the Ottawa coach possibly being mildly retarded puts out his best skill players and no big guys to help out. Buffalo's response? Let's beat the crap out of them. And they did as can be seen here. It's pretty comical to see two goalies going at it. They can barely stand up and all the padding keeps them from really being physical. Ottawa goalie Ray Emery was obviously happy to be out doing something other than guarding a net against a tiny little puck. But then leave it to really likes to fight guy Andrew Peters. He saw Emery and it was like a cheetah picking out the slowest fattest gazelle and he went to town. All in all it ended up having over 100 minutes of penalties from the brawl.
We can take a couple of things from this. One, the NHL actually got a little exposure and people other than the normal fan have taken notice. The odd thing is that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is trying to ban fighting. Sure hockey purists might want to see some triple deek like on Mighty Ducks but for the rest of us we want WWE on ice. Bring on the blood Bettman. Second, it showed how willing a team is ready to back up one of their own players. When do you see this in any other sport? Sure in baseball everyone from the bullpen likes to get on tv but this was pure hate for the other guy and for what he did. I mean the freaking coach was standing on the wall yelling at the other coach. Can you imagine if in the NFL the teams were on the same side seperated by a little plexi glass? It'd be awesome and coaches like John Gruden's intimidation factor would go up at least 10x.
Hockey still has a long ways to go but give me a good brawl every now and then and you might keep my attention... just a little bit.
