The Basketball Hall of Fame is Overloaded with Coaches

The "Big O" griped about the Basketball Hall of Fame sometime ago. He was concerned that not enough players were being considered and enshrined into Springfield, Mass. He sounded like a cantankerous old man.

Turns out, Oscar was right.

The 2007 Hall of Fame finalists were announced last week, and of the 14 individuals nominated, a whopping three were players. In 2006, six people were inducted; only three were players. In 2005, the Hall indicted more current Big East Conference coaches than players.

The Hall of Fame has catered to non-players since its inception in 1959.

When the Baseball Hall of Fame opened in 1939, it inducted five people. All five could play a little ball.

Twenty years later Basketball's Hall opened with a class of 15 and only 3 were players.

The Hall seems to like administrators, rule makers and anyone who ever ate lunch with Naismith.

The Hall's has 134 players and 138 non-players. Isn't that incredible?

It is also how you end up with half the Big East coaches from the 1990s in the Hall, while Artis Gilmore, Chet Walker and Detlef Schrempt await the call.

If Detlef Shcrempt is what constitutes a HOF Professional Basketball Player, then please, keep inducting coaches.
