Just heard that Ratzinger (sp?) from Germany was selected as the next pope. He will take the name Benedict the XVI? Any thoughts on this? Good choice or bad choice? From the little I've read I think he is a conservative. Honestly, don't know too much about him yet. Just thought I post this as news and hope we can get a discussion going.

Not Catholic. But it is interesting that the Cardinals picked the "bulldog" of policy.

Do you think they picked "the bulldog" to counter some of the things John Paul was doing before he died?

I'm not Catholic, but as I understood, John Paul was getting away from Doctrine and some people didn't like it (?) - If I'm showing my ignorance, forgive me. I didn't follow the Pope that closely and even after he died just picked up snippets... :undecided

I thought it was kind of odd that they chose a pope that's 74  . In about 10 years or so well be in the same boat.

It's all so the prophecy will come true. The Order of St. Benedict has been fortold to last a short time. Then comes the last Pope, Peter....

Actually, he's 78.

On a related note, I'll be in Germany this summer; I wonder what the general feeling of the populace will be. While there's a small but strong Catholic base in Germany, it is overwhelmingly Protestant. I have a feeling the Germans will be proud of him regardless of whether they are Catholic themselves, but you never know. After all, the Reformation did start there...

Most of the really strange sects of christianity, including those that died out originated in Germany.

Good to see a pope that can actually move around and talk on his own.

I guess you're referring to Protestant "sects" like the Lutheran church. If you ask me, all of Christendom is strange, including (and especially) Catholicism.
