I hate to admit it, but I heard an interview with Mack Brown on the radio in Austin yesterday where he made a great suggestion to help the recruiting process. He said that if it were up to him, he would not just have one national signing day, but instead would break it up into three days throughout the year.

First, he would have an early signing period (like some other sports) in July. This would allow the kids that are 100% committed to a school to sign early and get the process over with. So, kids that know in their heart that they are Aggies, longhorns, etc can go ahead and make it official so that that other schools will quit bothering them and they can enjoy their senior year of HS. It will also prevent the coaches from having to check up on them every couple of days to make sure they are still verbally committed.

Second, there would be another signing day in early December. This would be for the kids that made up their mind in the fall. They could make it official and then be able to enjoy the holidays with their families.

Then the normal signing day would take place in February. This would be for the last kids that had not been able to make up their mind yet. By doing it this way, the coaches can concentrate their time on the undecides and not worry about the other recruits that have already signed their LOI's. Also, coaches could concentrate more on sophomores and juniors for future classes.

I think that would be a great thing to implement. Sure, there would not be the huge ordeal of National Signing Day like yesterday and would take away some of the excitement, but I think that would be a good thing.

Thoughts??

I was going to post that, but I don't like Mack so I didn't...

He also made a good point about how these kids we get mad & happy about & their rankings... they did all that stuff against 14, 15, & 16 year old kids at the Highschool level... He said you gotta wait & see how they turn out before you pass judgement on a player..

Not a bad idea.

The main reason why you'd be interested in this is that you could tell right away which recruits were blowing smoke up your ass with the 100% committed talk.

That would be the best part of it.... would also save a lot of $$$$ for all the schools sending their coaches across the nation to see kids repeatedly....

My only question would be this.... we see kids transfer repeatedly.... how would kids be affected if they decided to transfer on their own. Would they be required to sit 1 year like other transfers...

I wouldn't think having a December signing day would be smart as there are some high schools still playing and of course half the schools are going to bowl games.

But I would like an early August signing day as well as the standard Feb day.

I agree. An early signing period before the season like they have in basketball would be nice. After that, there is too much going on to try and get a kid to sign in december. Just keep it to two.
