http://www.aggiefans.com/users/twelfthag/RN.pngTexas A&M has started the 2008 recruiting season strong and the 2007 season hasn't even finished yet. With the 2007 class shaping up to be smaller than in recent past and currently ranked just outside of the top 25 according to rivals.com many fans have begun to look forward to the next season and have high hopes.

Franchione and Staff started the week by addressing an area that the University of Texas really cleaned up on this past year in the offensive line. On the 23rd it leaked that Britt Mitchell, a 6'8" 300+lbs Junior from Roscoe High School, had become the first recruit in the 2008 class. And at that size he definitely made a splash. Some fans have questioned the level of competition he has http://www.aggiefans.com/forums/gallery/images/73/medium/1_mitchell.JPGcompeted against at 1A Roscoe but it's obvious that Fran and Co are pretty high on him after offering before even getting to see him perform or measuring him up at a Junior Day. To help calm the nerves of anyone worried about this recruit remember that Longhorn All-American Leonard Davis was also from a 1A school in Wortham. Another positive for Mitchell is that he was quoted as saying that he didn't commit to Texas A&M because they were the first school to offer but it was because A&M is the only school he wanted to go to. These are the type of players that A&M has to go for. To really embrace what this University is about will make any player 10 times better and will allow them to continue to be successful.

The Staff followed up this "huge" recruit with a few more at their first Junior day of the year. Continuing to add to immediate need areas they offerred and recieved commitments from more offensive linemen in Leroy Chevalier from Yates, and Joe Villavisencio from Jacksonville. The Staff also continued to add to the defense that definitely improved but is still far away from the Wrecking Crew days by adding Yates Defensive end Damian Square and Brenham Linebacker Kyle Mangan. Square is being considered by many recruiting services to be one of the if not the top defensive end in the state and his video can be seen here via texaspreps.com. Mangan was named to the 1st team All District in 18-4A and also starts for the Cubs basketball team.

I'll have more info as it becomes available.

We'll have to make up ground for an overall weak '07 class. When tu won the MNC last year, they swept the state with tons of early commits. By getting a lot of commits early , 2008 should get us back on track.
