Yesterday ESPN NFL analyst John Clayton wrote a column about possible candidates for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job. Here is who he named:Bill Cowher, Jeff Fisher, Mike Martz, Wade Phillips, Ron Rivera, Bob Stoops, Jim Mora, Jim Caldwell, Mike Zimmer, Norv Turner, and Mike Sherman. I'll add Lovie Smith because he's entering the last year of a contract. Now I'm going to break it down to who Jerry Jones should hire.

First let's look at what some of the top coaches in the past 5 years have in common. This years Super Bowl coaches, Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy, have a history. Smith coached under Dungy at Tampa Bay helping to develop the "Tampa 2". Both coaches were defensive coordinators prior to becoming a head coach. Last years Super Bowl winning coach was Bill Cowher from the Steelers. He was also a defensive coordinator before becoming the head coach in Pittsburgh. Before him Bill Belichick won the Super Bowl and coincidentally he also served as defensive coordinator as well. The exception in this time period is Jon Gruden who was an offensive coordinator in Philly under Ray Rhodes.

Jerry Jones will be looking for someone that can take what he gives them and wins. Everyone knows that Jerry will spend the money it takes to win but who can put it all together? He will also be looking for someone that can take that next step, at least a playoff run, in the next year or so. It would seem that Jerry will be looking for someone with experience and personality.

So taking all of this into consideration:

Defensive Coordinator
Mike Martz
Mike Sherman
Norv Turner

Experience
Bob Stoops
Mike Zimmer
Jim Caldwell
Ron Rivera

Personality
Wade Phillips

This leaves us with Lovie Smith, Bill Cowher, and Jim Mora. So of these three how should Jerry pick?

Lovie Smith is from Texas. He was born in Gladewater and went to high school in Big Sandy. He has proven that he can build a winner in a short time and with the recent success would gain immediate respect from his players anywhere he goes.
Jim Mora is another young guy considered by most to be a great hire in Atlanta when he was brought. Some may think his failure in Atlanta is a result of Michael Vick playing quarterback. But his comments about leaving Atlanta to take the University of Washington job has to make you question his loyalty.
Bill Cowher has proven that he can take a team and make them a consistent winner. The biggest problem is that he's just retired and wants to spend time with his family. He also just bought a new house in Raleigh, NC.So what does all of this mean? Go hire Lovie.

I really hope Wade Phillips doesn't get offered. That guy has way too much class for the cowboys.
