Here's my thoughts:
1) Our d-line was dominated physically. The same thing happened against Nebraska, but not as bad. With no pressure on the QB, Longshore had all day to throw. Also, we let them push us around and force big holes for the running game. We lost this game on the front line.
2) Goodson is a great compliment to Jorvorskie Lane, but he's not ahead of him. J-Train needs to get 20 carries every week, minimum. He had SEVEN last night. As far as matchups go, Jorvorskie was our biggest matchup advantage against Cal. We had an ace up our sleeve and never used it. Cal is a fast defense, and all we tried to do was have Goodson and McGee outrun them. That would have never worked. Against a team like that, you have Train pound them all day.
3) Marshawn Lynch is a great player, and we had no answer for him. He was strong, fast, and just plain outplayed our defensive guys.
4) Not enough risks taken. McGee has always been great about not turning the ball over, but we needed to be a little more risky when we were passing. Martellus is too slow to get wide open against a fast team like that. His size and strength was his advantage. We need to pass it high and let him reach over and outmuscle the Cal defenders. We didn't.
5) Punting for zero yards is a killer. That shank gave Cal 7 points.
6) Goodson's injury looked to me a lot like an ACL tear. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen it happen in enough games that that's what it looked like. Get well soon, Mike.
7) We mixed it up early with Courtney Lewis getting some plays. I liked it. We have 3 RBs on our roster who are good enough to start, so why not use all of them and keep the defense confused?
8) This is the first time all year that I'm disappointed with Darnell. His adjustments have become legendary in us dominating the second half of our games this year. After a 10-14 first half, we were outscored 31-0 in the second half.
9) When we were down 28-10 and had a 4th and 6, I would have kicked a FG. Our offense needed to score in order to gain a little confidence and momentum. Whether we had a FG or a TD, we were still 2 TDs behind either way. Giving Cal back the ball with a 3-possession lead pretty much ended it. In the end, though, that play was irrelevant. We were beaten physically, and it became apparent our psyche was hurt as well.
10) Be optimistic for 2007. We still have Jorvorskie Lane, which means we will always have a chance. We also return some other players who are pretty good (McGee, Harrington, Dodge, Peterson, Goodson, etc.). Gig'em Aggies!
Now let's enjoy Aggie Basketball and all the great things that Coach Gillispie is doing with our boys.
