http://www.utexas.edu/features/archive/2004/graphics/football2.jpgWith only 2 more days remaining in '06, WHOOP!, I thought it only appropriate to look back on the past year.
The New Year didn't exactly start as planned as the basketball team suffered their first loss of the year on the road to eventual NCAA tourney Pacific on Jan. 3. After that game the team proceeded to go 3-6 to start to conference play including some heartbreaking losses to Oklahoma state, Oklahoma, and K-state, which had many Aggie fans wondering if the early success was really just a product of easy scheduling. But Billy Clyde wouldn't let his team quit and starting with then #25 Colorado the team started a 7 game win streak to close out the conference season, which included a last second win over archrival tu. Acie Law converted on a last second three pointer to put the Aggies on top for the big win.
With the strong finish to the conference season the Aggies were given a first round bye in the Big 12 tourney in Dallas and then for the first time ever one a conference tournament game by routing the Colorado Buffaloes (many considered this a play in game for both teams). http://aggies9496.com/Images/AggieGifs/TheShot.gif The third round game came against Texas and in a hard fought battle the Aggies came up just short 74-70.
But the Aggies had shown enough to the NCAA selection committee to overcome a high RPI and be placed into the tournament as a 12 seed. The first challenge came against Syracuse and great guard Gerry McNamara. The Aggies showed the Orangemen what defense was all about and McNamara, who had carried his team through the Big East tourney, to only 2 pts made on 2 free throws. It was A&M's shining moment and finally got some national notoriety. Next the Aggies faced LSU and Big Baby Glenn Davis, who loves cookies by the way ;). A&M was hampered by their big men getting into foul trouble early but Acie Law took control down the stretch and gave the Aggies a lead with just a few seconds left in the game. Then with 3.9 seconds left LSU senior, Darrel Mitchell, launched a deep three to give the Bayou Bengals a big win and a trip to the sweet 16 and eventually the final 4.
All in all it was a defining season for the Aggies as they were able to sign a great recruiting class and have gotten national respect by being placed high in most polls. To see highlights of the season click here and here.
