I don't know server size or the legalities of this but what if we had a music library. Nothing we're you could download music (unless a band were to say its cool) but select songs from a library and have them playing on a playlist.

I remember the good 'ol days when I'd go to my friends w/ benefits chick's dorm room & get a s#itload of songs off the A&M server from other users. Ahh, the days of free napster...

We'll probably talk about the days of free napster like hippies talk about the days of free sex...

It would essentially be a radio station wouldn't it? I know there's lots of regulations with that. But how does Myspace get away with it.

I have always wondered how youtube gets away with having music videos on the site.

I think as long as you have ownership and don't pass on ownership for free that it is ok

Myspace gets away with it because the artists run the site and upload their own songs...essentially waving the distribution fees or legalities. You can prevent download through myspace (which turns it into a radio) -- but since it's the bands page, it's like visiting their website.

If my old band's myspace page started playing other bands music, then we'd run into issues with licensing and fees, etc.

If you buy the CD and upload it, and not allow people to download it. One would think it could be legal. Its ilegal to download not to listen.

No, it's illegal to distribute. If you host music for people to listen to (without buying the CD), you have to pay broadcast rights...(like radios do). Otherwise, you're cutting into profits the record company says they'd make from users who now listen to your free version...

Yeah my g/f was telling me that when you have a band play a concert you have to pay all these fees in case they play some other bands song. And that gas stations with the radio playing can get in big trouble with the FCC for distributing it to their patrons. How retarded.

yeah, tell me about it...

wife's new arrangement (she instigated)...if I have to give up a weekend day to hang out w/ her family, I get lucky...

that way, we both win...(she actually wins twice, but that's another story)...

i actually did a bit of research on this subject and we can make it legal... but its not going to come cheap. basically what it would entail is running our own radio station and getting a server software package/license. All told it would be $250 (for the server) and then ~$20 bucks a month for licensing.

The best we could do is offer a way to list all of our songs and do online requests (which can be automated to go into the queue). But this way we could be 100% legal and offer this feature. So if we did something we would likely have to take up donations or something to help out. The site is doing decently $ wise (enough that we are covering the cost of our server) but the rest of the $ we use towards the tailgates so theres not a whole lot else of spare cash so if this is something you are interested in we would have to take up some sort of a collection.

well get on that.... and actually i could make it alot cheaper but it wouldnt be as good. (ie we could get a free version of the $250 server application) but the biggest reason to get the more expensive version is it has the requests/web scripting builtin to the server (which is something you would have to custom write... if we wanted the same features).

here is where i saw it.
http://radio.satelliteguys.us/playing.php (and there is a subsequent vbulletin addin to have it appear in vbulletin)

So how would you go about getting the songs?

jagowar
12-18-2006, 11:45 AM
once you pay the licenses you can get them however you want (ie people here coudl upload songs for us)

granted we would be limited by our server hd capacity (about 200 gigs atm) and that will constantly decrease as we add more and more to the downloads section. But we could put aside 20 or 30 gigs for music.

That would be kind of cool. I guess the big thing to look at is what would the return on investment be? Would more people become members or new posters come in? I don't know the answer to those.
