We always hear or talk about other schools and how they're still in highschool with their music, cheerleaders, and bands. I'm just curious what you think on this. The cheerleaders in USC is considered are recognized by most college football fans in the country as the best and most beautiful in the land but what does it matter if it is so "high schoolish"?
Also the Ohio State marching band is absolutely amazing. I'm sure that our band can do what they do too but it is a long standing tradition and considered by most to be one of the greatest traditions in the country.
Then we talk about stuff like Baylor playing the Hells Bells on third down over and over. I'll agree it was annoying but watch tOSU and Michigan play today they were playing this in the horseshoe today on 3rd down! And then I flip it over to Alabama and Auburn and they're playing that song where everyone sings along... ( I know they play it at Olsen ). Anyways I doubt that anyone would consider any of those institutions to be "highschoolish".
Anyways I guess I'm wondering why do we put so much emphasis on trying to put down other schools for what they do instead of having more pride in what we do? Are we scared to admit that what other schools do, even though it is different, adds to its own unique environment? I don't know what it is I just get confused by it sometimes and now I wonder... If we take so much pride in being different, then why do so many people accept the fact that we've become "normal" as a football program without showing any concern or urgency to change and set ourselves apart from the country again?

I'm surprised there were no responses... BTW I heard the "hells bells" at the Los Angeles Coliseum too...
*disclaimer: please realize I'm not on either side of the "highschoolish" arguement.

I guess I'd never heard the idea that Aggieland sort of went its own way because it thought that other college football traditions were highschoolish.
I mean, after all, they have fight songs in high school too. And alma maters, etc...
I always thought that college football passed those traditions down to high schools, not the other way around.
Anyway, I think the idea that you have to completely reinvent the wheel to be unique is wrong-headed anyway. I've been in a lot of college football stadiums and a lot of bowl games and I'm always struck by how different the fan bases are.
Go to a USC game and its fight on and the victory sign. In Austin, you look into the stands and its a sea of hookem horns.
I also think its interesting to see other fans' reactions to our program. Again, it's just a band, a mascot, some cheerleaders, etc. but to a man, I'm amazed out how unique they find it to be.
A live steer that's bigger than a toyota, hot chicks in chaps, a band in over the top western wear...it's our style and there's no one else out there doing it. Same thing with USC...with Michigan...with tOSU...with OU.
Y'all have y'alls thing that makes you unique, but you're not the only ones that are.

I love the traditions A&M has... but I do like some that other schools have....
Personaly, while A&M is the capital of traditions, I would like to see a few more...
Something similar to the way only the most special Buckeye's get to dot the eye outside of band members.... It would be nice to see the most special of Aggies get to do something similar with the Band....
I know, I know.... some old schoolers might not like that... but it is just something I think that would be cool.....
I do & don't like the idea of A&M having cheerleaders.... I do because I like chicks & frankly friends of mine don't understand why A&M only has yell leaders... but they do like out yells... like BTHO ________..... But I don't like the idea of cheerleaders, because the Yell Leaders are freakin awesome & make TAMU so freakin original on a Public level.... so many things make A&M original, but when a football game is on, that is one thing that is gauranteed to be mentioned & is something everyone I have talked to envies, because I have never seen cheerleaders have the same control over a crowd the way our Yell Leaders do.

I think the yell leaders should stay at Kyle and stay out of Reed... cheerleaders would be better in that instance

I do like that aspect also about College Sports, not just football.... In their own way, every team is actually it's own Nation with it's own customs & courtesies.... I know some hear the terms Buckey Nation, or Aggie Nation, or Sooner Nation in a figurative nature, but really when you look at it the way Cali talks about it, they really are their own Nation...
Towns morph into their own Country.....

I can't say I agree or disagree with you on that one.... I have seen the dance team & they are cool, but the Yell Leaders give the Aggie Basketball Fans an original feel to them that people wont find at other Basketball arenas.

I think most schools at this point have kind of hit a point where they feel like they've got all the tradition they want.
It brings up an interesting point. I know that Aggies take pride in their traditions and feel as though they are the capitol of traditions as evidenced by your posts...
The fact is, though, I don't think most schools are seriously vying for that title.
At some point, additional "traditions" are viewed by most of the fan base as being kind of unimportant.
You actually have the same thing at A&M. You've got some hardcore "uncover" folks and some that don't care. There were corps members insisting that "squeeze Ags" was a critically important tradition. Most Ags, though, thought it was dumb.
The point is that I think schools tend to reach an equilibrium point on this sort of thing. In Texas, the kids that got into Texas could have gone to A&M. They most likely had the grades. It just wasn't for them. So they're not going to want to have a lot of the traditions that A&M has...that's part of the reason they decided not to go there.
That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it one way or the other, but I think at most schools they kind of do what makes them feel good and don't think about it quite so much.

The yell leaders weren't there when we lost every conference game and they try to control every minute of the game and what we do so it never really gets crazy loud just controlled loud. It just annoys me that they show up when the team gets good
