1. How do you not use a short yardage specialists when it really counts?
2. How did Oklahoma get 4 timeouts in the second half?
3. How do you have 12 men after 2 timeouts and why did we send schroeder back in after the second timeout?
4. McGee went into a shell

1) OU was actually stuffing us which really disapointed me about our O'Line.... with endzone view I was amazed at the holes OU gave their RB's & the holes we were unable to get for our guys... we rushed for over 200 yds and all but it wasn't done in the same way... Our RB's got our 200yds, primarily Goodson, but OU's O'Line gave OU their 200yds rushing...
2) Was thinking the same damn thing....
3) I don't know if they showed it, but there were 2 coaches trying to call Chad back but with the crowd noise it seemed he didn't hear them switch from Punt Return to Goal Line D....
4) Very true....Folks nock Fran for under utilizing Bennett but last night was totaly on McGee not finding LOD... Bennett was consistently beating LB's & Safeties on crossing routes & McGee never found him... Bennett could have easily been the Game MVP had McGee found him... Very frustrating to watch Bennett work that hard in the passing game & not get the ball....

1. honestly that doesnt mean a thing to me.... not many defenses in the country could stop the train 2 times (and i fully believe he would have gotten it in). If we cant get 2 yards in 2 plays with the jtrain we didnt deserve to win.
2. i think one of their to's was for the reviewed call but i did think they didnt get one of theirs marked right or something.
3. i agree.... we had no buisness worrying about a return because stopping them was much more important. and if they did a fake punt thing where the qb kicks it we still win because we have the ball back.
4. he was open some but i really think mcgee is coached to only throw when receivers are wide open and our receivers were never that wide open. and it makes sense to minimize mistakes but at some point you have to let the reigns go. i still dont like it.

On the timeouts they took a their first timeout which was announced and then they challenged the play. Then they got it back.

Actually it varies from team to team... most but not all teams use their punt returner... some teams (possibly A&M don't really know) don't especially at home since the crowd noise at home would prevent the punt returner from communicating with anyone at the line of scrimmage... it would be impossible for Chad to yell over the 12th Man...
Besides... like I said... there were a couple of coaches trying to get his attention... but no one would have heard an atomic bomb go off cause of how loud the crowd was..

McGee is one gutsy football player, but not a very skilled passer.
Short yardage situations.....give it to the big guy that can get you the tough short yards.

I'll assume that you're just in a bad mood right now but on just about every team the punt retuner is in charge of counting because he is behind the whole team and has a good view of them. Watch football the returner counts the team and you can tell because they always count themselves last.

I think he is skilled & gutsy, just needs to trust himself a lil more... He had happy feet in this game... very similar to the ttu game... :(
He made some really good plays with his feet (diving over defenders)... but there were a few times he didn't have to scramble & did.... which didn't allow him to see WR's open...
A few times I even thought to myself if he would look back he would have seen Lane WIDE OPEN.... but during the heat of battle I knew that would be asking to much especially with 2 or 3 guys chasing him from that way.... Non-the less, McGee will continue to progress & improve... so will the O'Line & as they grow together, they will become better & better....
We are headed on the right path...

As a whole we're headed the right path but last night was a step backwards. Lets just hope it doesn't grow into something worse. I still think we'll end up in the cotton bowl if Nebraska doesn't. The co-bo is supposedly under pressure to take a north team.

Normally that is when they are the road team... again that is normally, simply because when your at home, what good does it do to count the guys if you can't yell at some one to get off the field because your own fans are too loud...
If an OT can't hear a QB, what makes us believe a guy on the line of scrimmage is going to hear a punt returner 40 yds behind him?
I think at home it was more than likely one of the LB's responsibility to count & they didn't.....

Yeah I agree... I have heard the same things from some friends of mine in Dallas... Supposedly there are rumblings about South teams being the only ones to make it recently.....

Someone is still going to count. Qb's don't not read the defense because they can't communicate an audible.

for you football savy explain this to me. How come 12 people think their supposed to be out there?
Superaggie79
11-05-2006, 08:19 PM
I couldn't see real well because our row was so packed I let my g/f stand in front of me. But I'm just going to guess that in the huddle something was said about a switch that didn't get communicated to everyone. If I remember right there wasn't anyone running on or off the field after they walked out there.

Like I said... I am guessing Chad didn't hear the switch... I saw 2 coaches calling him back.... which 2 I couldn't tell being at the top of the Zone... but they were waving & calling him & he never turned.....
We probably had a punt returned called & switched it up once Thompson took the field, but I am guessing Chad didn't hear the switch...
I wasn't on the side line so how would I know... all I know is I saw coaches trying to get him off the field....
I will say this... you would think that since the Refs hooked up McCoy with keeping an eye on the clock one could have tapped Chad on the shoulder & told him to get off the field.
Superaggie79
11-05-2006, 08:29 PM
That's a little different. Alot of refs actually do talk with the qb and have a general on the field relationship with them. Thats how it seems to me anyways.
Pumchavas28
11-05-2006, 08:32 PM
They didn't seem to talk to McGee the 3 times McGee had to remind them to reset the clock last night....
3 seperate times I saw McGee poke his head out of the huddle & see the clock & then tell the ref to reset it because it wasn't supposed to be started....
My thoughts on the game:
1. I better not hear one person say that the defense lost us the game by not stopping OU on 4th down in that last drive. For the last three quarters of the game they held OU to 3 points and gave the offense MULTIPLE chances to tie or win the game. The offense, with McGee as their leader, went out and failed last night to do anything.
2. After throwing an interception McGee went into his shell. At best they should have stopped calling passing plays because he just stood there with the ball and then threw it away. Those were all basically wasted plays. McGee got called for intentional grounding and then went out on the next play and did the same thing. I'm suprised they didn't call it on him twice. At worst they should have pulled McGee for a series to let him get his head right. Our offense was embarassing.
3. Just to beat a dead horse, 3 and 2 on the 2 and you don't give it to Lane? Boneheaded. They (coaches) decided to put the ball in McGee's hands to throw when McGee had already proved that he was to shaken to throw a pass.
4. OU has a fast defense. Why were we trying to out run them laterally? It never worked. Yet the majority of time we ran it up the middle we gained yards. Why would you play to the stregnths of a defense?
My overall view. Defense did what they needed to do to win the game. Offense and coaching failed to do their part, in critical spots, and that cost us a big win.

From the begining of the season till now, Darnell is making adjustments earlier & earlier in the game....
From 1/2 way through the 2nd quarter he shut down OU... and he has been able to do the same against everyone else except OSU....
(Which goes back to my "WE DON'T PLAY 2 TEAMS THE SAME WAY" moto)
But Darnell has done a fantastic job!
Considering what he took over, I really couldn't ask for a better year from him...

You obviously don't know fb 101....
Home teams don't normally have their return man count because of crowd noise....

Seriously though our defense makes defensive calls all day regardless of it being at home or away. Punt return is essentially another defensive snap. In most situations if he counted 12 he'd immediately call timeout. In this situation however there weren't any so it'd be his job to get himself or someone off the field. It wasn't as if he was going to make a play from where he was lined up. It was obvious he was oblivious to the 12 men on the field.

From Football Coaches.... Hell in High School when ever we played at home the punt returner never did the counting because our crowd was one of the loudest in the Valley...
Even up here at Converse Judsun they do it that way... When Converse plays at home, the punt returner never does the counting....
Watching this game tonight between Indy & New England, the Pat's punt retuner isn't doing the counting... cause their at home & crowd noise....
The only time it makes sense to have the returner count is when on the road because MOST crowds are smart enough to shut up & let their punter get the ball off with out a problem....

Then we have Mark Tommerdahl for no reason..... And what time out was Chad supposed to use EVEN IF HE WAS SUPPOSED TO COUNT, and how was he supposed to get the other players attention.....
Chad moved up because OU had no one in shot gun or punt formation.... why would he stay back with the QB under center?

I said that he didn't have a timeout to use and he came from deep to up close. And being that he was the only offensive player on the field it would've been obvious that he probably didn't belong there.

Obviously not since I was in section 523.... but it's just known that with large Home Crowds, the home team doesn't have the punt returner count... it makes no sense....

I think it all came down to what I call the Steve Spurrier syndrome. We run a pretty complex offense and sometimes the need to be diverse kills us.
We tried to force diversity when it was pretty simple what would work: Goodson, Lane. Goodson, Lane, Lewis, Lane, Goodson, McGee on a run...safeties creep up deep pass...Goodson, Lane, etc.
I think Les and Fran out thought themselves on Saturday night.
The D is getting better and better and basically rode out the storm and shut OU down. Watching the second half only made me realize how good Peterson was/is for the Sooners. I mean everyone knows the play that's coming and he gets the yards anyway.
A tight game that we flubbed away. We had no business losing but we did and it happens. I'm angry but it's not the end of the world.
