Does anyone agree with this guy... I know he has the God given talent to do it, but does anyone see Bennett for-going his Senior year to go Pro?

Aggies Mailbag: Enjoy Bennett now because he's destined for NFL

Brent Zwerneman
Express-News Staff Writer

COLLEGE STATION – If No. 22 Texas A&M needs any extra motivation on Saturday at Baylor, the Aggies need look no further than ... down their lockers at sophomore tight end Martellus Bennett – the humorist from Houston who puts the "extro" in extroverted.

Only Bennett could provide in-house bulletin-board material leading up to Saturday's showdown with the Bears.

Talk smack about Baylor or smack-talkin' coach Guy Morriss? Nah, Bennett saved his best stuff this week for teammate and starting quarterback Stephen McGee.

Asked about McGee's "look" in the huddle late in all of these close games, Bennett frowned and shook his head, claiming McGee's look never changes throughout.

"He's still ugly," a grimacing Bennett said.

McGee looks a lot like quarterback Jonathan "Mox" Moxon (actor James Van Der Beek) of Varsity Blues fame, so looks aren't really a problem for A&M's dashing quarterback who grew up in Alamo Heights – no matter Bennett's claim.

Bennett might have really hurt some feelings had he said that about some of those offensive linemen, though. They're sensitive guys. And mostly big and ugly.

Anyway, Aggies fans need to enjoy Bennett, who plays both football and basketball, while they can, because he's as good as gone to the NFL after next season. Bennett arrived at A&M with hopes of playing in the NBA, but somewhere along the way he woke up and realized football was his meal ticket. He'll have some pretty nice meals before his playing days are done.
Six-foot-seven power forwards aren't a commodity in pro basketball – and even in the upper echelon of the college ranks. 6-7 tight ends with the power to knock an opposing player's helmet off after the catch – which Bennett did this season – are not.

Also, Bennett's hoops teammate, guard Acie Law, said Thursday that Bennett has told him he still plans to play basketball this season. And then he'll likely concentrate on football from then on out.

pumchavas28,

I'm right there with ya man, I don't get it....How does Brent (Zwerneman) get from point A to point B?

I mean seriously, why is it that when we have a stud difference-maker he's suddenly going pro after his junior year, yet Texas continues to "find ways" for their guys to stay at Texas and complete their eligibility?

If you figure it out, please let me know

To answer your question directly - No, I don't, and that's mainly because I don't think we have enough information to formulate an intelligent opinon as to whether he's going pro or not.

Why is it that we're already declaring him for the pros next year? Has he said as such? If we do have that info then Brent needed to print it as much rather than just throwing something out there in the hope that it would stick....

Do you guys ever get the feel that some of these Aggie sports writers write something they think their boss (guaranteed sip) would want them to write?

Who knows what is going on in 'Tellus' head? If we were like "Thats so Raven" we could see into the future & know, but we aren't. :D

That being said, Zwerneman does know his Aggie football. He has even written a book 'Game of my Life' about the best games ever for some Aggie greats. I don't know if he knows something that we don't or if he is just trying to find a story, but the guy is well into the Ags.

I'd love for him to stay, but he'll very likely leave if he's projected in the first round.

No way. He has to have a very good year NEXT year to leave early. I'm not worried yet.

Agreed...he's got the talent but hasn't "produced" on the field yet. Until he puts up stellar numbers, I don't think a team will take a chance on him in the early rounds...

If he has an awesome year his junior year -- then yeah, he may be gone...but he also may want to stay and help win a Big XII Championship and possibly a National Championship -- you're never sure what motivates guys anymore.

Come on you all, get serious. Martellus has all the talent in the world, but he is not even close to being ready to play on Sundays! His blocking is top notch, but he still has alot to learn. At the risk of getting crucified, I don't really think its his fault, I just don't think the coaching staff has utilized him properly, maybe "properly" isn't the correct phrase more like....haven't used him ENOUGH! How many TD does he have this season? If he is thinking about leaving early maybe he should call up Leeland McElroy and Toombs and talk to them about leaving early. Brent knows the Aggies and is an excellent writer, I just don't see Tellus leaving early.:)

I don't see NFL as of yet. Let's see him get a couple of td's this weekend, and then perhaps kill a baylor linebacker, and i'll change my mind.

I'd put money on he is gone. These guys don't have to have good or great years they just need to have the abilities. The athletic basketball TE is all the rage in the NFL and he has been projected a first rounder since high school. I'd say he is about 95% gone next year. the only things that keep him here are injury, and the fact he looks like really enjoys college life.

I think he is gone though....we at least have him for one more year

Four years, and maybe a high pick. He will wow people at the combine but we don't consistantly showcase his abilities

I agree he has to show a bit more but let's remember that he has 18+ games at A&M still to go until he can make said NFL decision. A lot of good and bad can happen in that time.

Do I think he's under utilized? No, he's a TE in a ball control offense. It's not number of catches but rather the catches that are made.

I guarantee you he is accounted for by the defense on every offensive snap.

I look at him like I see Michigan TE's. They don't make a ton of catches but after almost every game they have a key catch or two.

I mean he's not Mizzou's "TE's" in terms of catches but then again he doesn't spend 99% of his plays in the slot either.

I mean he's the rare pass catch TE that can also block meaning you can run to his side. When he stays on the field you have no idea where he is going to line up or what formation A&M will be in. Not only that you can run either direction since he is a plus rather than a minus to the run game.

Seriously have you seen this guy block? I'm going to get crucified but I think he leaves here a better blocking TE than Dan Campbell because he block ends, lb's, safeties, cb's not only on the line but in space.

He is kind of the poster child for our offense which is versatility.

He is going to be the number one recieving option next year. It should not be a shock if he leaves. I think any team should expect 5 star recruits to only be on the team for three years.

Yeah with Chad, Riley & Taylor all gone after this year, Bennett will see an increased amount of touches next year.... He could very well put up numbers next season that A&M has never seen for a TE..... With Brown & Franks on the outside as the deep threats, Bennett could wind up as one of the Top 5 guys in the Big 12 in Receptions...

I've always been a fan of playing out your time in college. More importantly I've been a fan of these student-athletes finishing their degrees. However I understand that the NFL is going to throw the promise of lots of money at tellus. I also understand the worry these guys must face about getting injured before they go pro.

With all that being said I hope tellus stays but I won't blame him for leaving.

I can't blame anyone for taking a $10million dollar signing bonus. I mean damn that's more money than I'll make in 20 years.

Taylor isn't gone next year. And Pierre Brown & Howard Morrow will both have another year of experience. Not to mention EJ Shankle & Cody Beyer. It will be a long time before we have a "go-to guy".

Oops... My bad.... I had forgot about Taylor's other Red-Shirt year... I keep forgetting how many he has had....

I can't wait to see both him & Bennett dominate the middle of the field.....

But yeah, with Brown, Morrow, Shankle & Beyer all running routes..... next year we could very well have an even better offense that what we have now....

Taylor didn't RS his freshman year. He RSed last year & that was it. Its a common misconception though. We actually discussed it on the podcast last week--everyone else thought the exact same thing you did, but I was right. :D
