Anyone else planning on seeing this tomorrow? I read the book back when it came out, and can't wait to see it.

For anyone who hasn't read the book or seen the previews, the movie is based on a book by James Bradley. His father was one of the flag raisers in the famous picture taken on Iwo Jima:

The movie is about the invasion of Iwo Jima and follows the men who raised the flag and survived the battle as they return home as heroes and go on a war bond tour.

Clint Eastwood is the director, and it has a pretty good cast, it looks like. Alot of it was actually filmed at Iwo Jima, which is very rare.

I loved the book, and am planning on checking it out tomorrow after work.

Probably will just wait for it to come out on video. The wife and I don't go to movies that much.

Cool. My grandfather was at Guadalcanal. I read and saw Thin Red Line, but didn't care for it all that much.

Well, I loved the Flags of our Fathers book. If its the same story, I'm sure I'll like the movie as well. Plus, they filmed on Iwo Jima, so it will be cool to see it in color on a big screen.

Off to see this in a few hours. I'm pretty excited, although I did find out that the battle scenes were all filmed on some black sand beaches on Iceland. They did film some stuff on Iwo Jima, but not much, due to filming restrictions.

Did Japan slap some restrictions on what they could & couldn't do?

Not just this movie in particular, I think there's just a general filming restriction there.

Going to see it this sunday. My whole family are Marines and my grandfather and 2 uncles fought in the Marines during the Island hopping campain. My Grandfather won the Navy Cross and was put up for the congressional medal of honor in the Battle of Tarawa, which was the bloodest battle the Marines fought in the Pacific.

It really was the greatest generation. You can hardly meet a person in their mid 20s to mid to late 30s who didn't have a grandfather who served in some capacity. Even those not in the fighting or in the armed forces gave up what were supposed to be the best years of their lives to that conflict, and I am eternally grateful for their sacrifice. :gig:

I Netflixed it about 2 months ago and thought it was pretty interesting. It's going to be cool to see the Japanese version that comes out next year.... I think it's called "Letters from Iwo Jima" or something like that....

It's going to be the same story, same time period, except from the Japanese side.
