Wow, that is the highest I've seen us ranked. I don't know if their sports writers have any credibility, but #6 is freakin' high. (I just realized that I accidently posted this in the baseball and softball forum. It is supposed to be in basketball)

•1. Florida (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',1);)
•2. Kansas (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',2);)
•3. LSU (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',3);)
•4. North Carolina (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',4);)
•5. Georgetown (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',5);)
•6. Texas A&M (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',6);)
•7. Alabama (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',7);)
•8. UCLA (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',8);)
•9. Duke (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',9);)
•10. Pittsburgh (http://javascript<b></b>:Swapcopy('spt_collegetop25bball_2006',10);)

Strengths: This program’s trademark is fierce defense. The Aggies were within a jump shot of knocking LSU out of the tournament last March because they made it so difficult for the Tigers to get a look.
Weaknesses: The Aggies were out-rebounded in seven of their last 11 games in 2005-06. They have to find some help inside for Joseph Jones, who averaged 6.5 boards per game.
Stars: Acie Law averaged 16 a game; Jones dropped in 15. They are the outside-inside combination every teams needs. The other star is Gillespie, whose teams play hard and together. Must see: A Jan. 6 game with Kansas State. The Aggies and Kansas are the class of the Big 12 and it will be interesting how title hopeful K-State and Bob Huggins are welcomed that first big week of the conference season. Must See II: Dec. 9 vs. UCLA, another tough defensive team.

we'll find out early whether we deserve it or not. We play @ LSU and @ UCLA back to back (Dec 5 and Dec 9).... :gig:

It ain't where you start, it's where you finish. And Texas tends to finish well!

Also missing is Oklahoma....weird.

Like Cali says though...it's not where you start... (but it sure helps) come tourney selection time.

I never though I'd see the day where A&M was ranked higher than Duke.

Texas has NO returning starters. They are young and raw. I except them to finish 4th or lower this year and then make a big push to be back near the top next year.

Baylor is going to make a splash this year and might steal some of our thunder.

We might take our lumps at the beginning of the season. But I believe Barnes will have it together by the conference season and tourney time. He's won the conference with less talent than we have coming in.

I'm guardedly optimistic. I think that the last two years, we've been stung, if not by injuries, by a lack of team chemistry. Great players, just not great together. Still got us an elite 8. We had no true PG and I don't think Barnes could play the up-tempo style he preferred.

I expect that to change with Augustin. And we've got some athletes that will be ready to run.

Cali,

Its going to take a year for your team to gel. THere is no senior leadership to help out the younger guys and bring them along. There is only so much a coach can do with young guys and they need the senior guys to mentor them and to have someone to emulate and practice against.

I know you except big things by conference time, but I think you may be somewhat dissapointed. But like I said, I except Barnes to have your team ready by next year.

We'll see. I remember Barnes taking out ads in the Daily Texan for tryouts the year he won his first Big 12 title. Our injuries were deep.

I'm not expecting big things in the sense that I expect us to win the conference, but I won't be surprised if the team starts coming together for a good season.

It's college basketball. Few teams can count on senior leadership.

(BTW--our guys right now ARE getting mentorship. They've been practicing against some of the guys that have graduated and gone on to the NBA. Pretty fierce stuff from what's being reported).

The problem Texas is going have is that a few of their freshman probably won't be around for their sophmore seasons thanks to the NBA's rules.

The problem I see with Texas is

1. Size - bigger teams will out-rebound them. They are rectifying that in their next class with 3 PF's

A&M has Jones, AK, Elonu, Davis etc.

The good thing for them is most teams these days don't have size. Experience is overrated somewhat because of AAU ball.
