(use username/password: slashdot/slashdot)Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne asked for, and received, permission Thursday from Cal State Fullerton athletic director Brian Quinn to talk with baseball coach George Horton regarding the vacant Aggies job.
---------------------------------------------------
Texas A&M reportedly is offering $500,000 a year to the next baseball coach, an amount that includes incentives and bonuses. Johnson, who compiled 876 victories in his two decades, earned $140,000 annually.
Horton signed a three-year contract extension through 2007 and received a modest raise plus incentives in December that could put him beyond the $165,000 mark.
Horton, 51, earns $115,764 base salary, plus incentives, such as bonuses for winning the Big West Conference ($1,000), regionals ($1,500), super regionals (one month's salary) and College World Series (three months' salary). He also gets money from baseball camps and if his team has a high GPA, and use of a courtesy car.
"We could not get into a bidding war with a football-playing school," Quinn said. "But we certainly value George Horton."
