If you're not working to get ahead in the Big 12, you're falling behind. And if you’ve taken a look around campus lately, Texas A&M certainly isn’t losing any ground. 2006 has been a year of growth for Aggie athletic facilities.

The most noticed and talked about addition is the 3,954 square foot scoreboard in the south end zone of Kyle Field. The scoreboard debuted on September 1, 2006 at midnight yell in front of more than 20,000 “Whooping” students. It has provided in game entertainment, replays, announcements, and even live updates from other games around the nation. It is certainly an improvement over the old video screen which was 1/7th of the size.

This gigantic video board was purchased and installed free of charge through a partnership with Learfield Communications, who also paid for ribbon boards at both Kyle Field and Reed Arena, a new eight sided hanging scoreboard at Reed, a portable multi-purpose video display to be mounted on a flat-bed trailer, and one of the most complex video studios in all the nation. The new additions are said to be the biggest video project of its kind ever constructed at a sporting venue.

While the Kyle field video board adds to the game day experience in football, they may be dwarfed in comparison to what the new scoreboard and ribbon board combination could do for the basketball game day experience, and recruiting. The eight sided professional caliber scoreboard alone will be a face lift to the sometimes dull looking Reed Arena. Adding the ribbon boards to it will be like reconstructive surgery.

The improvements couldn’t come at a better time for Coach Billy Gillispie and his basketball team. They’re coming off a fantastic turn around year and an upsetting loss to LSU in a game that would’ve sent them to the sweet 16. The atmosphere in Reed could explode this year to carry the team to exciting new heights, in part because of these new additions.

The video boards aren’t even the most exciting improvements for the basketball team. Soon, construction will begin on a 40,000 square-foot basketball facility that will connect to Reed Arena. It will house state-of-the-art locker rooms, practice gyms, player lounges, meeting rooms and coaches offices. It will become a great recruiting and training tool.

Don’t think they’re finished building yet. Ground has been broken on the new indoor practice facility and track complex which is already slated to host the 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships. The facility will feature a 200-meter hydraulic banked track with a Mondo surface. It will also seat up to 5,000 spectators.

The McFerrin Athletic Center is named for Artie R. and Dorothy McFerrin, who donated more than 10 million to get the project off the ground. It was become home to nearly every Athletic team in one way or another, most notably, the Aggie football team for indoor practices.

Texas A&M is definitely doing its part to stay ahead in the facilities race in the Big 12 and on a national scale. The doors that open for Texas A&M athletics after these projects are completed will push the Aggies to a new level and point them in a new direction. It will be exciting to see how far the Texas A&M can go in our efforts to Build Champions.

if only they could fix the seating situation at reed... its horrible that the visitors are always shooting at the far basket with nothing but the band there to distract them...

I haven't heard anything about that, except that it's going to be a two year project. My guess would be that major construction wouldn't take place until after this season is over
